I have inadvertently deleted the contents of a file. Is
there any way I can retrieve them? I possibly pressed
the control key and one other, but I don't know which.

Hi

Did you delete the 'content's of a file, or the file itself? If the former, then no - the contents have gone.

Hi,

If you overwrote a file with new content, then the old is gone. If you just
deleted a file, check the recycle bin. If gone from there, you need an
undelete utility. These are commonly available for free, and work on the
premise that the space the file formerly occupied has not been overwritten
with new data yet. Once that has occured, recovery requires more extensive
(and expensive) work with dedicated forensic tools by someone who knows what
they are doing.

This one here works quite well for basic file recovery:

There are 3rd party software that can recover files (even files that have
been ctrl key deleted).
The only trouble is the recovery attempt can not be too long after the
deletion as the file will be soon started to be over written after the
deletion.

Hi

If you re-read the problem - the 'contents of a file' have been deleted. That is something completely different to a file being deleted.
