We are operating on Windows 2000 Server. Someone hacked
in to our computer and put in a virus. The person was
running superscan and downloaded other programs on to our
computer. As soon as we noticed it we stopped their
program from running and the hacker sent a note to us via
notepad that said if you stop running my programs again I
will delete all your files....So of course we disconnected
right away, uninstalled all of programs added by the
hacker and ran a virus check. We found Win32.Parite.
After many attempts to delete this virus we finally were
able to get rid of it but we had many infected exe files.
We asked the virus checker to cure or move but
accidentally hit delete. We deleted almost 200 exe files.
Most of the programs we were able to reinstall however
there are many problems now with areas within windows that
aren't operating. The most specific at this point is we
can not use any printers or add printers. We tried doing
a recovery and emergency repair of the operating system
but still no change. When we try to add the printer it
goes to a certain point and then says printer invalid. I
am sure there are other files that got corrupt. Besides
for reinstalling windows all together does anyone have any
suggestions? Please help it is a work computer and our
computer tech can't come until Monday.....If you need
further clarification or have any suggestions please
respond.

Thank you.

Seeing that this is a server, here is what I would do:
- Disconnect the machine from the Internet.
- Re-install the operating system from scratch.
- Install a good virus scanner. My preference is Trend
Internet Security.
- Install a firewall. Trend Internet Security has an
inbuilt firewall.
- Instruct the virus scanner to update itself automatically
at least once a day.
- Reconnect the machine to Internet.

I'm sorry if this is not the answer you're looking for.
Unfortunately, with the type of damage your server
suffered, you might spend many hours in an attempt
to repair it, and most likely you will end up with a
damaged and unreliable operating system. Look at
the event as an overdue reminder that you can no
longer operate a PC or a server without an up-to-date
virus scanner & firewall.

Thanks...was hoping for a better answer but had a feeling
that is what needed to be done.
