Delete part of a text string

Have First Name(Space)Midle Name in a cell - only need First Name.

Have been trying LEFT(A1,LEN(A1)-SEARCH((" ",A1)) but the new cell only
shows the first five characters of the first name.

Any suggestions

Try this as long as the first name is one word:

=LEFT(A1,FIND(" ",A1)-1)

If the first name is more than one word you're on your own! <g>
 
try this to return the first name

=LEFT(A1,FIND(" ",A1)-1)
