In my System Volume folder I have restore folders going back to 9-3-05. All
these are taking up 15Gb space. Of course I want to keep current ones but
can I delete the old ones to free up space?

You cannot delete specific system restore points, however, you can
delete *all* system restore points except the latest one:

Start > Run: cleanmgr.exe > select drive > Advanced tab (translated
on-the-fly). This doesn't make too much sense because the new restore
points will fill up the allocated space (15 GB) sooner or later. You
may want to decrease that allocated space instead.

I wouldn't manually delete them myself. My suggestion is to right-click
(with your mouse) on the My Computer Icon> select 'Properties'> in that
window that opens, go to the 'System Restore' tab. Turn off system restore
and reboot your system. This will clean that old cache out. After you
reboot, turn it back on and set a new restore point from Start> All Programs>
Accessories> System Tools> System Restore.

ACK. Messing around with the "System Volume Information" folder is
the fastest Way to render the System Restore tool useless.

That's not necessary. WinXP has this built-in function, see my message
in this thread.

Even better... While your are in the "System Restore" tab, move the
slider to select the amount of disk space you want to use for your
restores and you shouldn't have to bother with it again.

1. Use Control Panel - System - System Restore and click on the
Settings button. Move the slider so as to reduce the size of the
System Restore archive. Normally it is not advisable to use a System
Restore point that is more than a week or 10 days old and for most
users setting the system restore space to somewhere in the 800 mb to 1
gb range will provide this.

2. Use Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk
Cleanup and click on the More Options tab. In the System Restore
(bottom) section click on the Clean Up button to remove all but the
most recent restore point.

This will avoid the risk, very slight though it may be, of
encountering a problem and not having System Restore available should
something go amiss when rebooting after disabling System Restore
completely.

Good luck
