I have duplicate user accounts in Documents and settings folder and I want to
get rid of them. How to do that??

Hi,

Duplicates are impossible (two folders at the same level cannot have the
same name). You may find that some are appended with a .windows or other
extension. You need to first determine which ones are actually in use. This
can be caused by corrupt profiles or by reinstalling WindowsXP on top of
itself (not a repair install). Run %userprofile% from a start/run box to see
which folder is opened, this is the active user folder.

Thanks for answering,
I meant duplicates of folders but with different names (old accounts of mine
due to reinstallations and so on). I know which one is in use. But the system
deny me to delete the others.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough. The duplicates exists as folders with with
different names (all folders of mine due to reinstallations and so on) in
Documents and settings folder. The system deny me to delete these.

Hi,

Click Help & Support, search on "taking ownership". You need full control of
the folders in order to delete them.

Any idea why this happens? we have this problem on a corporate network and
the fix is very tedious. Does anyone have a more permanent fix?

Hi,

No more permanent solution, the owner of a folder is determined at the time
of creation. It is only changed when manually initiated.

Thanks, Nutcase.

Just to clarify, there is no preventive fix I can do to stop this from
happening?

Hi,

No, no way that I am aware of. It would involve changing the mechanism of
how a folder is initially created.
