Delete Dialog Freezes on Desktop

Hello,

I'm hoping somebody out there has seen this before...

I just rebuilt my HD and have XP home edition Svc Pack 1 (can't use 2 to
messes up everything)...

When I try to delete any file off of my desktop...it asks for the
confirmtion...then the "deleting" dialog freezes on the screen...

I end up going to the task manager and stopping the explorer shell and
restarting it...but it is getting old fast...

Any ideas...
