I customized a button from a macro (the bell), but not it is obsolete. I've
been trying to delete the button (bell). I've tried Alt and pulling it off,
I've opened the tool/customize diolog box and pulled it off - they stay off,
until I close Word - and then it comes back. Why?

Let me guess, you installed Adobe Acrobat 7 since you created your button?
If so, the following article by Graham Mayor on Adobe Acrobat and Word
should help:
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm (especially the
last part). Feel free to write directly to Adobe and let them know how you
feel about this (if it is indeed your problem).

the macro and button was done years ago. I've been trying to delete for quite
some time - just this past week we got Acrobat 7.

Well, Acrobat's add-in will keep you from saving changes to Normal.dot, but
if you've had this problem for longer than you've had Acrobat 7, then
chances are the button is coming from another add-in, or perhaps Normal.dot
is read-only, or is regenerated at startup. In any case, see the last
section of http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm for
information on working around the Adobe problem. You can also force a save
of Normal.dot (if you're convinced that's where it's stored), by pressing
Shift while clicking on the File menu and then choosing Save All.

silly question? how do I edit the Windows registry?
And also, thank you all for all your help - I am so very appreciative. It is
wonderful to have a place to go for the ills of microsoft ! (and adobe)

silly question? how do I edit the Windows registry?

Carefully! In the Start | Run box, type REGEDIT (or regedit) and press Enter
or click OK. This opens the Registry. You then have to navigate to the key
Graham specifies. Although the Registry is very foreign-looking, the
navigation is very similar to the files and folders in Windows Explorer and
not too terribly scary when you get the hang of it.
