Help, I can't get rid of a file and it is screwing up
everything. Whenever I try to delete this file I get a
msg. telling me someone else or another program is using
it and I must close that first. I don't know how to find
out what other program could be using it. This is a video
AVI file I created from my digital camcorder using DVD
complete. I have done this in the past and never had
trouble deleting before. This file is a 4gig file and
whenever ever I try to remove it my computer slows to a
crawl. I have tried to delete it in safe mode, no help. I
have pressed ctrl, alt, delete to see what else might be
running and I don't see anything else running.
I think this file is resposible for my DVD burner to
create poor quality and defective DVD's.
Can anyone help me? Thanks, Chris

It sounds like you must be using ZaZaA or one of it's
offshoots. If you are, someone may be trying to download
the file. Go into KaZaA, into the traffic tab, and find
the file at the bottom. Right click it, tell it to cancel
the download (unless the person downloading is really
close to finishing; in that case, let them finish) and
then quickly delete the file from you computer before they
restart the download.

This should work if you are using a filesharing program.

Hi Chris,

This edit will allow you to delete it and the instructions below:

AVI Search Remove (Line 74)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Close all open apps. Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory
with the offending file(s). Then open the Task Manager and click on the
Processes tab. select "explorer.exe" under Image Name. Click "End Process".

Now you will only have the command prompt and the task manager. In the
Command Prompt, DEL the offending files (DEL *.mpg, DEL mus*.avi, DEL
test.wmv, etc.)

The files should now delete without a problem. Now go back to the task
manager and click on the Applications tab. Click the "New Task..." button.
in the dialog, type explorer.exe and click OK.

dont try and boot to Safe Mode and then try to delete because it won't work
(been there done that)

My method never fails:

Go to Tools-->Folder Options-->View and uncheck 'Hide file extentions of
known file types' and hit OK
go back to the file you're trying to get rid of and you'll see ".avi" at the
end of the filename.
Rename the file and delete the ".avi". (Only delete ".avi", leave the rest
of filname intact)
You're gonna get the pop-up "are you sure..?" then hit OK
then you can delete the file
