My computer has XP Home installed. It is about two years old and has 256 RAM and is a Pentium 4. When it boots up, it takes about a minute before an icon I have clicked responds. I have installed all updates but the problem continues. I would appreciate any help or advice that anyone can provide

Thanks

A viral infection is but one recognized cause of a delayed desktop shortcut
click response; it has to be ruled out first, and fast. I am sorry -- or
rather, glad -- that this has not yielded any clue.

You can also download Bootvis from Microsoft. Bootvis is a Boot
performance trace visualization tool for use with Windows XP systems.
It gives a graphical view of what processes are doing what and when
during boot and allow you to optimize your boot up. After you've done
your troubleshooting, remember to turn off tracing.
