delay in external e-mail

When using Outlook 2000, I am having problems receiving external e-mail.
E-mail is not delivered unless I close Outlook and re-open. Today I closed
Outlook and re-opened ~1:30 p.m. to discover several e-mails sent in the a.m.
It is sporadic and is only happening to a couple of people.

Has anyone had this problem?

Are you using Exchange server?
If so, are you running any personal firewall software on these computers?
That is the most likely culprit. You would need to open up ports/allow
exceptions while on the LAN. Methods vary by version of software.
