Hi -
I've read newsgroups til my eyes hurt, but haven't seen this exact
problem discussed.
I have several machines on a home lan with a linksys router connected
to dsl. The linksys serves dhcp, and all machines point to it as
gateway.
After booting an XP Pro machine, I start a browser and it takes
several minutes (and I mean several minutes) before the browser is
able to load up a web page. It repeatedly times out. After reading
newsgroups, I assumed it was a dhcp configuration problem. However, I
can ping, by name, external servers during the whole time the browser
is unable to access the internet. And ipconfig shows the correct
(10.1.1.xxx) dhcp assigned address and the correct dhcp'd dns servers
Notes/Clues
Its not the browser itself. I have the same problem using mozilla or
ie. Or for that matter ssh (via putty).
It doesn't seem to be the router config. I have an XP Home machine and
an XP Pro machine and both have this problem. I also have a Mac and a
Linux box which do NOT. I can browse immediately after booting the
other os machines.
The XP Home machine is a laptop. If I hibernate it, I do NOT have the
problem. I can browse immediately after it comes out of hibernation.
ipconfig shows the correct (10.1.1.xxx) dhcp assigned address and the
correct dhcp'd dns servers. This seems to be the case almost
immediately - though the browser is still stuck for several minutes.
I have tried it both with NetBIOS enabled and disabled (though I don't
know if this is of any importance - but it seems lots of posts pointed
to NetBIOS for delays)
I'm open to ANY clues on this. What other tests could I try to track
this down? It's quite annoying.
Thanks In Advance.
