a day or so ago I dl'ed the latest updates. Since that
time I cant seem to keep my computer from crashing
whenever its doing anything "data heavy" like finishing
the download of a file or more importantly Defragmenting
my HD. In fact every time I start to defrag the machine
seizes completely. It analyzes then starts the process of
compacting files and dies right then.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Disconnect from the Internet or enable a firewall.

Use System Restore to back out the updates made the other day.

See if the problem is rectified. If not, undo the restoration. If it
is, you've at least begun to find the problem.

Before Defrag, close all programs and turn off the
screensaver. If that doesn't work, do this:
Start/run/type MSCONFIG and click OK, go to the startup
tab and uncheck/disable everything except your anti-virus
program, if Norton, it will start with NAV. Click Apply
OK and reboot. Now you have a "lean, mean machine" and
will run a lot smoother. Disabling in startup does NOT
delete any programs but stops them from using up your
system resources at startup.

The system should not freeze up, regardless of what is going on in the
background.
