No direct error message. Task Manager says Defragmanter not responding. From
either Explore or system tools defragmenter slow to respond no
defragmentation occurs.

It is not responding because it is waiting for some resource. Likely causes
would be competition for drive access or insufficient free space.

You posted this in another thread, what do you mean by "not responding"?
Does it start at all? Is it hanging when it defrags? Please elaborate.

John

Nothing happens. Hour glass icon eventually becomes an arrow. No action
occurs as to analyzing or defragging, doing Ctrl, Alt, Delete brings up Task
Manager showing, "Defragmenter not responding" No action in either bar at
bottom of the screen, before defrag and after defragmentation. Hope I am
clear in this response.

Try running chkdsk C: /f from the command prompt window.

When it tells you that it can't lock the drive, do you want to run chkdsk at
reboot - answer yes.

Then reboot.

After chkdsk has completed reboot into Windows, try running defrag again.
Note that you need 15% free disk space for chkdsk to run. If you are low on
disk space, uninstall some of your larger programs - such as Microsoft
Office. Empty the recycle bin. Run defrag again. See if it works.

Richard Urban, entered the command as you suggested but did not answer yes
because replied message was different from your quote, "chkdsk cannot run
because the volume is in use by another process, would you like to schedule
this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts". Would you
still recommend I proceed with your suggestion?.

Richard Urban, Ran the command, rebooted, chkdsk /f found no problems, tried
defrag, no luck. failed to mention previously click on File,Action, View, or
Help these are very slow to respond if they respond at all. the whole defrag
folder seems to be corrupted whether I access the folder from Program,
Accessories, System Tools, Defragmenter or if I choose to use Explore and
Properties of C Drive.

Yes. Old mine here. Type Y and X out of the window. Reboot. When done with
check, type "exit". The machine will reboot yet again. Remember, you need
15% free space to run Windows defrag.

That's the way it works. Click on Yes and reboot.
