Defragmentation does not work

I am running XP SP2. Since I installed XP on ME defrag worked a few times but
now it is completely unresponsive. It opens but neither analyze nor start
defragging. What could be the problem? Do I need to reinstall the XP again?
Thanks for any hint to get this working again.

How large is the hard drive and how much free space does it have?

Well, you've got plenty of room so that isn't the issue. Are there any
errors to give you a clue in Event Viewer?

Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

Also, if you upgraded from a machine running ME that machine is elderly.
I would do a hard drive diagnosis. Download a diagnostic utility from
the drive mftr.'s website. You will create either a bootable floppy or
cd with the file you download. Boot with that media and do a thorough
test of the drive. If you get any physical errors, replace the hard drive.

It opens but neither analyze nor start
defragging.

Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze in Disk Defragmenter
(dfrg.msc).

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
Defrag to work.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set the startup type to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When the service starts, click OK |
Close Services | Reboot

<quote>
Note the following things will fail if this service is not running:
The builtin defrag will fail to work, and if running defrag from the command
line one gets this error:
Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine

Wesley, thanks buddy! That did it. I am back in business.

I hope you don't mind me tell you about another problems I am having. That
is I can not install anything now. I get the message: "The windows Installer
Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in
safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact
your support personnel for assistance." Is this related to my earlier
problem? Many thanks in advance! I do not running Windows in safe mode.

Malke, thanks for taking the time! Before upgrading I did download the
Microsoft's utility to check if my machine is ready for upgrade and gave me
the clean bill of health except pointed to my printer and another program
that might not run correctly. One strange thing to me was that I bought the
CD for clean install but somehow the CD did not like it that way and instead
did an upgrade. So, I am out $100 for buying the full version instead of the
upgrade version.

Wesley, forget about the question I placed in my previous message. All my
problems seems to have vanished by your suggested fix! But how did that
happen? I did not disable the DCOM. How do I get more info in regards to the
rest of the stuff disabled in that list, meaning which should and which one
should not be disabled. I am happy though that my problem is solved. Thanks
again for your kind assistance!

If you wanted a clean install, you should have removed the windows ME
partition, then created a new one with the XP install CD.
