Defragment

Hi,

Defragging makes files contiguous (placing pieces next to each other rather
than spread out on a hard drive), thus reducing the seek time required by
the drive head. Anything that reduces time in the computer world generally
leads to greater efficiency and enhanced performance. I'm not aware of any
real disadvantages to defragging other than allotting time for it to take
place.

Consider defragging after major program installs. ANALYZE will help
determine if it is recommended.

I do all my PC's every day, remember XP will only tell you to do i
when it reaches 10% or more, the 1% that it's fragmented may contai
the files I may be looking, just do it

Disk cleanup, and defrag every day

I defrag regularly as well, i have set an automatic defragmenter to run
everyday and check the defrag levels. My drives are always kept
uncluttered and free from rubbish wth disk cleanups as well.

Thanks Lakebum

You defragment when the drive is fragmented and when you do, it will help the numerous fragments to be brought back together on the drive... generally makes application response, file access, boot shutdown etc smoother and faster. Hence advantageous. Heres links on defrag u can check out

Defragging daily is *way* overkill for almost everyone. For most people,
doing it even as often as once a month is more than necessary.

Once a month ? once a week at an absolute minimum

Every web site you visit and every program you open will fragment th
contents of your hard drive, sure someone that never goes online ca
get away with extended periods and run no AV but for manual A
checks

Unfortunately the "normal" user is online every day probanl
visiting dozens of known web sites and nearly as many unknown sites
all of which will fragment the drive

It's not a malfunction that the drive gets fragmented, it's simpl
from normal use, to wait until XP told you to do it may be too long
the difference can be seen well before it hits 10%

Advantage ? SPEED

hi.. defragging weekly should be fine... but defragging is effectiv
if the partition has enough space to move the fragged files. So it
better to defrags with minimum 20% or above free space. So do dis
cleanup, before defrag. One other thing most of the time syste
restore files are huge and wont get defragged for the same reason. S
make sure you have enough space

Defragging does improve hard drive life with little improvement in th
overall performance of the system

Overall its good to defrag as we keep creating, deleting and modifyin
files

True but with small drives being not much less than 80gb it's rare th
new user would ever fill even an 80 gig drive

I would guess that 160gb might be the average size, that is only a
several of my systems use 2 X 80g SATA drives in claytons raid, th
performance is worth it, and having near a dozen systems the dat
loss risk is worth the performance gain

Defragging the drive more often means it's also done faster, the mor
it gets fragmented the longer it takes, so doing it at 1% is not an
drama, with a disk clean also done at the same time your syste
always is at it's best

No matter what your drive is fragmented to, just take a look at th
amount of fragmented files of even a 1% fragmented drive and ther
will be hundreds of em, remember a large drive size complicates th
matter, 10% of a 60g drive is the same as 2% of a 300g drive, 10% o
a 300g drive would mean thousands of files not where they should b
and they are usually files from the programs/games/updates you us
most often so it's a benefit all round, so would it not be of mor
use to defrag the 300g drive more often

Please consider
