My computer has been defragging for over 24 hours and is only up to 52%.
Could someone please tell me why. Thanks.

You have something runnng, probably a screen saver, or other background app.
Look at Task Manager processes.

Try this First and then Run the Defrag:
Open or Double My Computer Icon on your Desktop or on the All Programs Menu
and then Right click your (C:\) Partition and select properties from the drop
down list.
On the Drive properties click Disk CleanUp, make sure to check all boxes on
the new pop-up menu/window.
Make sure your Recycle Bin is empty and then Open this Run command and type
in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and let it run, you may need your XP CD handy.
After that log into Safe Mode by Taping the F8 at start Up and select from
the Boot options Safe Mode then Run the Defrag there.
Defrag need at least 15-25% of your Free Disk Space to run.
HTH.
nass

type in msconfig.

under startup tab, near bottom select disable all, ok, and reboot.
