That is because it does not display a UI as the time to complete is unknown
it just runs until it is done.
If you want a UI and more features then buy something like Diskeeper 2007
(or one of the other products available)

An alternative to Diskeeper and, in my opinion, far better is PerfectDisk.

I suggest you leave it to the scheduler, and forget all about defragging
manually.

There is little need for it, and the weekly run should be fine.

I have the scheduler set to defrag once a week at 1:00 a.m. At that time who
cares how long?

No need. Set it and forget it. If you want, right click on Command Prompt
and select "Run as administrator" (Command Prompt is under 'Accessories').
At the prompt type:

defrag -c -v

That will tell it to defrag everything it can on your computer. Might take a
while but you know it is done. Thereafter find "Disk Defragmenter" (found in
System Tools under Accessories) and schedule regular defrags. Don't have it
doing it every day unless you know you need it as it's too much wear and
tear on the drive. Once a week or once a month is enough.
