Can aby clever bod out there tell me where to look in order to creat a
desktop shortcut that takes me directly to the defrag tool.

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter

Create a new short cut on the desktop and in the shortcut wizard the
location box insert:

%windir%\system32\dfrg.msc


Another handy shortcut to have on the desktop is the Computer Management
Console , create a short cut on your desktop and in the shortcut wizard
location box insert :

%windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc

Hi Sal,
As Alias mentioned go to Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >>
Disk Deframent and Right Click on it and select Shortcut or you can drag it
and drop on the Desktop by Hover over it and when highlighted Hold Dwon Left
Mouse Button and Drag it out of the list then drop it where you want on the
Desktop.

I don't know why you want to that, but my advice is do not try to use it
heavily, as it can be helpful and in the mean time can shorten the live
expectancy of your HDD if overdone it.
 
Find it in the menu system.. highlight it.. press and hold CTRL while
dragging the icon to a space on your desktop.. you now have a shortcut
there.. alternatively, if that process is too difficult, highlight, then
right click and select 'send to desktop as a shortcut'..
