Defrag utility stuck

Any ideas about this one?

Ran the defrag utility on a laptop, seems to have (mostly)
defragged the disk, but it gets so far and then freezes,
showing 1% complete, compacting files.

File system is NTFS, chkdsk, scandisk, AVG, AdAware can't
find anything amiss. 384MB RAM (30% used).

The disk just rattles away, never gets anywhere.

Marc,

Is there any indication that the hard drive is being accessed when it
appears to "get stuck". What happens if you boot into Safe Mode and try
from there - any different?

Hi

Try running Defrag in Safe Mode to see if that makes any difference.

If you have a very full drive or haven't defragged in a long time, the
defrag can take a very long time. It might also indicate that it's having
problems accessing the drive or the files. Run a chkdisk first, and try the
defrag in safe mode. To keep yourself from getting anxious, run it
overnight, so you aren't tempted to keep restarting it.

Also make sure that you have at least 15% free disk space available for
Defrag to work with.
