This is in addition to my earlier posting of May 28. My
friend is running Windows XP and we are unable to defrag
her computer using system tools. It will go to about 3%
and then close down the computer. This computer is in
dire straights and needs to be defraged.

You may want to run chkdsk first, and then try running defrag in safe
mode.

You may want to purchase a decent defragmenter. The one in XP is a piece of
junk.

If you're going to stick with it, clear out the IE temporary directory. If
you're using Outlook Express, you may want to run the maintenance and clean
that out a bit first too.

And as the previous poster said, run it under safe mode to defrag.

It's still unlikely to do a complete defrag. I don't know why MS doesn't use
the Win2K defrag engine. It was far superior.

If the system is rebooting, then there is a hardware issue or a driver that
"isn't playing well".

I'd suggest booting into Safe Mode and defragmenting from there. If the
system does NOT reboot, then it is a driver issue and then the problem turns
into one of identifying which driver is causing the crash.
