defrag using system tools

I am trying to help a friend defrag her computer. When we
go to system tools and ask that the defrag start, it will
go to about 3% and then close down the computer. This
computer is in dire straights and needs to be defraged.
 
Are you running in Safe Mode? Helps avoid problems due to antivirus
programs, etc.

Tap F8 every second or so at the start of booting until you get offered that
option in a menu.

If Defrag doesn't work in Safe Mode - F8 from a reboot - try a 3rd party
program such a PerfectDisk:

On your friends computer is Windows 98 or Windows XP installed? The way your question is phrased made me wonder.

With either version of Windows it is helpful to delete temporary internet files before you run Disk Defragmenter.

Have you run a full anti-virus scan with updated virus definitions? To be more certain about the absence of a virus infection you could run a separate free scan from the internet. Try this link:
