you know when you go to defrag and it tells you that you
really don't need to defrag, but you do it anyway -- can
doing this actually lower performance and cause harddrive
access problems? it seems like my computer is a lot
slower than it used to be before i did this. i have
windows xp home, P4/2.4Ghz, 30Gb hd, 384Mb RAM.

it shouldn't make any difference if you defrag every day. you may have some
dodgy spyware or something slowing you down.

I have the same problem: frustrating as George W.Bush! After running defrag on a clean disk, machine slowed down considerably and Disk Cleanup utility stopped working completely. I've tried everything except prayer, voodoo, magic & SpyBot which I shall try next. All efforts have been for naught. (Could it be computer undetected weapons of mass storage destruction?) Should you find a solution, please reply this board

Box is Athlon 2200 @ 1.8GHz, 1GB memory, 80GB Western Digital HD, 128MB GEForce NVIDIA AGP,Windows XP Pro 2001 edition with all SP1 & all updates. I'm using XP Pro firewall
Virus protection is Norton-Semantec
