Anyone know why defrag analysis shows that I have 59,243,files and my Norton
virus checker says I have 86,250 files. What's the difference??

Most virus scanners have exclude options, & most times
the System Volume Information (System Restore) and
some others are by default omitted. Defrag on the other
hand will only exclude some system level $MFT files.

Thanks for your response. Your response indicates that the defrag numbers
should be higher than the virus checker. My situation is just the opposite.
BTY what are $MFT files?

SMFT is master file table

Visit the following URL to learn about NTFS
http://www.ntfs.com/

The different file counts shouldn't be near 27,000.
You should check your Defrag options to make sure
that certain file types or folders are not excluded. Are
you using the XP Defrag or a 3rd party defrag program.

Thanks again for response....
I just reran my virus checker and come up with 84,000 files and my
defrag summary still say's 57,000 files. I also checked the Defrag options
The only Option I have is disk cleanup. It says "that changes to the view of
a console file is using 3.85kb of space do I want to delete it. I have not
deleted it.
I'm using the XP defrag program.
Thanks for the NTFS site.

OTOH av will usually extract and scan files within other files such as
archives; this is more likely to explain why the av sees *more* ;-)

Running Windows-based av to kill active malware is like striking
a match to see if what you are standing in is water or petrol.

Ya, but the OP says the AV reports more files than Defrag.
