defrag and system restore not working properly

I have XP Pro and my defrag gets about 1/2 way thru and
pops up and says it is done, and that some of the files
didn't defrag, and to view report. But the report is
blank. And it only defragged about 49%-53%. When this
started happening, I tried system restore, to see if I
could get it back to normal, and my pc won't let me restore
to any previous restore point. Gateway couldn't help me
except give advice to wipe it all out and re partition the
pc, etc. I have, twice. No luck, it starts again after
about 2 weeks. Help!
 
Thanks for the info. I checked there, but nothing really
helped. I have also checked my system with adaware and
spybot s&d, and nothing there that was causing the prob. I
have just noticed that I have the same defrag prob with my
laptop. I think it is a microsoft issue, maybe?
