Hello everyone, I have several problems. I will try to
explain them below.

1. When I try to go to start and search files or folders I
get the following error message. "a file that is required
to run search companion cannot be found. you may need to
run setup". Now I have tried several fixes which include
running the install of the .inf file again which should
replace the bar, ballon and one other file. This did not
work. I tried manually replacing the files and that did
not work either.

2. When I try to access most of my .msc files I get the
following error message. "MMC cannot open the file
c:\windows\system32\dfrg.msc, this may be because the file
does not exist, is not a MMC console, or was created by a
later version of MMC. This may also be becasue you do not
have sufficient access rights to the file" Now I have
checked my access rights. I am logged in as an
administrator and I have tried several fixes such as
extracting the msconfig.exe file, running SFC /scannow
from the command line and also tried running the following
command from the run command:"mmc c:\windows\system32
\compmgmt.msc". I get the same error when running this
which should mean it would be an access rights issue, but
I have right clicked on my C: drive and selected full
control for all groups but still nothing works. Please I
need everyones input. Thanks

From Kelly's Korner (a-z area, under s, has clickable links)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com
Error: "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be
found. You may need to run setup".

The file that is missing, or corrupt, is one of two. BAR.XSL or
BALLOON.XSL (and/or other files in the same folder), depending on your
search preferences. These files are both normally located in the
Windows\srchasst\mui\0409 folder on your hard drive. These files may
be locally cached in the Temporary Internet Files, so this may explain
why some users have this problem "intermittently".

Again, try Kelly's, this time in the D area of a-z for defrag - run as
a scheduled task. Looks like you're right that it's an administrative
thing.

I have looked at both the microsoft fix as well as the
website below for correcting the issue. Neither has
worked. I do have both files listed in their proper
directories. I even got the files from another computer
and swapped them which did nothing either. Not sure what
to do next.
