Hi

I've googled for defrag utils, but is there one that will defrag a 90%
full HDD? Its for FAT32 on W98.

thanks, NT

Also, to make ME Defrag even Faster for it's 1st run ( you may have a
corrupt file ) from Windows Explorer, Delete all the files ( except the
read only file ) in Windows > Applog. Taskmon will rebuild the Applog
file.
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...port/kb/articles/q218/1/60.asp&NoWebContent=1
If you have plenty of memory, disable Taskmon.
Start > Run, type in msconfig & press Enter.
Click on Startup & untick TaskMonitor.

To view Applog, do this.
Windows Explorer > View > Folder Options > View, click on Show all
files. Click Apply & OK.
http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/start-17.shtml

Deletes entries in cookies, applog, history, temporary internet files,
and temp which may cause defrag to hang.

As that appears to be the ME defragger that would mean it was illegal
for non ME owners to use.

Maybe, maybe not. A German version is offered by a regular over the
Microsoft groups, for 98 users which complain that their native defrag
is too slow.

He put it on his homepage years ago, writes about it every now and then
in the microsoft.* hierarchy and hasn't been asked to cease and desist
yet.

So you have looked at every email he has received and concluded that
none were a cease and desist from Microsoft ? In any case even if
Microsoft overlooked contacting him that doesn't make it's use
"legal". If it were a "legal" download then Microsoft would have a
download link for it. AFAIK they don't.

Commercial software doesn't become "freeware" if the copyright owner
(for whatever reason) doesn't attempt to stop all "unauthorised" use.
The onus is on the user to prove that the software is "legal". Is
there a freeware/open source licence with the above ? I thought not.
More likely illegal use and packaging.

Regards, John.

My opinion is totally LEGALLY UNSUPPORTABLE, but there are just times when
copyright matters, and times when it doesn't. When MS doesn't put out a
decent defrag for it's system, I'd say from an *ethical* POV, copyright
doesn't matter, and people should freely upgrade to the ME version.

It depends on your conscience and whether you can sleep at night. I sleep
*very* well knowing I can defrag my almost full hard drive, and at a decent
speed...something MS didn't enable me to do with the "native" defragger. :D

Again, JUST MY OPINION, and NOT a legally supportable one. But heck, if
there are times when the rules just gotta be broken. ;-)

Well said jacaranda & I remember reading years ago that MS unofficially
supported using ME defrag & turned a blind eye to the sites offering
it. The name of the game is, > helping others, isn't it.

I didn't claim that it is legel, only that MS obviously did not
intervent, otherwise Mr Helmut Rohrbeck would have been banned from the
MS news server.

He is still there, posting good advice, which is enough proof to me,
that MS at least "turns a blind eye" - as jmatt called it - on these
activities.
