You can reset most features by opening Windows Explorer and searching for a
file called "normal.dot". It is the Word global template that holds most of
the customizations. If you delete this file, Word will generate a "clean"
one the next time you open Word. If you want, you can rename it to
"normal.old", just in case you might want to come back to it later.

This provides additional insight:

Which defaults? To some extent the simplest way is to reformat your hard
drive, but that is extreme and I don't recommend doing it.

Bill Foley's advice on normal.dot is good, except you might want to rename
it rather than delete it -- just in case there's something there you want to
save.

Other files and defaults depend somewhat on which version of Word you have.
Some things are stored in the registry, others are in separate files like
AutoCorrect entries and your custom dictionary.

Toolbars you can reset to default through an option.

Which version of Word do you have? What is your computer's operating system?
