Does Windows XP have the following files
autoexec.ba
config.sy
io.sy
msdos.sy
ntbootdd.sys

Hi,

No, except for ntbootdd.sys, those are from older Win9x operating systems.
Why?

It probably has empty files of those names around to pacify old programs
that may want to look in them for themselves. It does not use either
itself, nor the two DOS boot files
io.sys
msdos.sys

Any of the four though would still be used if you have a dual boot setup
to boot a Windows 95/98/ME system as well

I'm not sure where
ntbootdd.sys
comes from - it is not usually around in XP, but may be some driver
needed in special cases, so if it *is* around I would leave it. Come to
that, if *any* of them are around I would not bother to delete them

Well, at work I'm supposed to run a vulnerability test on an XP box, I've only used XP once but they gave me some official document telling me what to check and I couldn't find these files. I'm thinking it's a cut and paste job from a windows 2000 test case document. Does XP have similar files maybe with different names?

Hi Kelley,

WinXP boot files are ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini
