default language in Word 2000

Using the Tools/Language/Set language/default option to
change the default language in normal.dot from US to UK
English does not work. It does change the default language
of the styles, but doesn't apply this to the text. And
even though it warns that this change will affect all new
files based on the normal, it is not saved in the
normal.doc and it has no effect on new files. Anybody know
the solution?

Check the language of *Windows*, which is often set at US rather than UK
English by lazy PC manufacturers. Then open normal.dot and set the language
directly. You will need to add a character to the text space and delete it
before Word sees the change as something to be saved.

As Graham has implied, the actual true default language for Word is derived
from the setting in Control Panel | Regional Options.

You can change the language in Windows Control Panel. See Windows
Help for details.

But how do you change the language of *Windows*? Sorry, I don't

I'm glad to see that someone else is having the same problem as me! I checked my language settings in control panel/regional options and they are set for English UK. I then opened a document, and set the language using tools/language/set language/default. I wasn't entirely sure what Graham meant (I'm fairly new to all this) when he said I would need to add a character to the text space and delete it -- but I assumed he meant the text space of the document itself. Was this right? Anyway... I'm still having no luck... The best I've managed to achieve so far is that (after doing the above) it will sometimes start the spellchecker in English UK (for the first sentence or two), before inexplicably reverting back to English US. It is impossible to check a document of any length as each 'mistake' requires the spellchecker to be altered to UK, which is very frustrating. I'm using Windows XP and word 2000. (This is the same word 2000 that worked okay on my old Windows 98, but I've tried running it in the relevant compatibility mode, with no success)

The full content of this message has lapsed from my reader and has not been
inserted in the message, so I am going to have to guess what it was about :(

Word should pick up the language from Windows, hence the requirement to
check Windows regional settings.

It is possible that you have saved an alternative language in the normal
dot template, so open normal.dot for editing, check the language settings
associated with the paragraph styles, then so that Word knows a change has
been made to the normal.dot file, you need to type a character in the text
space then delete it. Then save normal.dot.
