While on a business trip my home PC got overrun by
parasite programs (no, I'm not going to ask what she was
doing. :-) ) There is a adware site set-up as my new
default homepage, and going to the Internet Options screen
shows the URL greyed out and I'm unable to modify it. How
do I change the registry or whatever to get rid of this
lock-out and put in a homepage that won't result in many
pop-ups?

run spybot search and destroy. from safer-networking.org
then you update and scan on easy and remove bad stuff. and
immunize and block bad pages. and in ie
,tools,options,advanced,uncheck both 'enable install on
demand',apply. if you can not get to spybot ,you will need
to 'disable third party browser extensions' to allow access
to some sites. also toolbar.google.com for popup
blocker, use basic install. or use firefox from
mozilla.org .blocks popups and has other add-ons.
