I would like to set up templates with different entries in
the "company name" field of the "document properties"
dialog box. So far, no matter what I try (including
changing my windows registry), the company name field is
always the same as what was entered when I installed the
software. Is there any way I can create different
templates for work documents and personal documents? I am
using Office 2000.

You can modify the Company name on the Summary tab of
File>Properties, and then save as a template. When
retrieving the modified value, use Insert > Field (Word
97, Word 2000) or Insert > Reference > Field (Word 2002)
to insert the DOCPROPERTY field with Company as an
argument.

Note that you cannot modify company information for the
Normal template by using this method.

An alternative approach would be to create a custom
document property of the Custom tab of the File>Properties
dialog box, and use the DOCPROPERTY field to insert that
value.

Attaching templates to documents after the fact is never satisfactory. The
correct approach is to create the template as you did originally, then
choose it in File | New (or Templates in Word 2002) when you wish to create
a document based on it. To facilitate this, you might want to substitute a
FileNew button for the existing FileNewDefault button so that it will open
the File New dialog instead of creating a document based on Normal.dot.
