Default directory issues

Although I have changed the default directory in Excel
successfully in the past, this time the information in
that field is not being used. Instead OPEN or SAVEAS
suggest the XLSTART directory in Documents and Settings.

I have also made changes recently to the default template
in Excel, also done successfully in the past, although its
a little tricky. I suspect a relationship, but I'm
stuck. I have tried using an older excel template but the
problem appears there as well.

Any suggestions?

Excel will start up with the data folder set under Tools, Options, General
as the default but as soon as you open a workbook from another folder it
will make that the current folder. By putting a regular workbook in your
XLSTART folder (which Excel opens automatically) you have effectively
changed the default folder.

You mentioned a "default template". Most people don't use one but if you
want to customize some of Excel's defaults for new workbooks that cannot be
set using the Options dialog you have to follow some specific steps, or you
just wind up with a regular workbook in XLSTART.

The default workbook in Excel is BOOK.XLT. The steps to create it are:

-Design your default workbook.
-Do a Save As and change the file type to Template.
-Do not save in the Templates folder as Excel suggests but rather the
XLSTART folder.
-Use the name BOOK (not Book1, etc). Excel will add the XLT extension.

To create a default for adding sheets to a workbook follow the same steps
except:

-Create a one sheet workbook
-Name it SHEET.XLT
