I installed WinXP Pro for the first time. At the time, I was not connected to
the domain but I knew that would be coming. I have loaded my software and
done a lot of work. Today, I was told to hook up to the domain. I went in
changed my network setings put in the proper information to join and viola, I
am hooked up. the computer came up with a new desktop and no access to the
programs I installed or the documents and database I use locally! I can log
off and log back on to the local computer, everything is there! how do I get
my desktop and programs when I am logged onto the domain? thanks

Try this:
1. Log on as a local administrator.
2. Copy your old profile to the "Default Profile" subfolder in
the Documents and Settings folder (Control Panel / System /
Advanced / User Profiles)
3. Rename your domain profile folder to something like "gary.old".
4. Log on as a domain user.

You should now see your previous shortcuts etc. Voilà! (No violins here...)

Well, I found the profiles with no problem, I highlighted the profile I
wanted to make the default. so far so good, then I looked for the default
Profile subfolder. this is where i am lost! sorry to be so dumb, I have the
choice to "copy to" so I looked there. this lets me browse but still can not
find the default subfolder. am I that dense? I will keep searching and I
appreciate the help. this should not be that difficult and I am sure once I
see it I will kick myself and laugh.
thanks
Gary

boy do I feel dumb, I read your instructions again and I see that the
default profile goes in the default user folder on the c:\documents and
settings\default user directory. I guess I should say DA
thanks

.. . . and I should have written "Default User" instead of "Default Profile",
and mentioned that the folder is usually hidden. Apologies!
