Normally when you setup the scan, the scanner software allows you to
specify the resolution (sometimes called "quality" in way to make it
look less frightening to some) of the image. Others allow you to
specify this when saving, esp. for a Jpeg file. Look for these options
in your software and rescan. Look through the help file and/or the
document that was part of the package for more help on how to do this
with the hardware/sofware you have.

Faya;
Go here:
http://www.winzip.com/other.htm
Download WinZip Self-Extractor and install it. Then you can Zip the
files and send a smaller file(s) to your friend. They can unzip them and
have the larger jpg's without the jpg's being distorted. Hope this helps.

Get the excellent free Irfan View from www.irfanview.com

That will not only view images, but will change size and then save in
any format. If this is a black and white, as a book rather suggests,
you may want to reduce the resolution not *too* far, but then save them
as .gif rather than jpg. Indeed I would start by saving from the
scanner in a mode other than the lossy jpg - usually .tif with
scanners, but it might offer .gif off the top
