Under My Network Places I have not only the expandable Entire Network
choice, but 17 other listings, including references to the drives on the
same computer, as well as other drives and random folders on other
computers in the network. (e.g., Thunderbird on Computer x, F drive on
computer y, E drive on computer x, etc.)

Is there some way to clean off these entries?

Thanks

select them and press delete (or right-click and select delete)

It's faster to navigate to nethood under your user profile, where you will
see the entries as folders - it doesn't seem to take as long trying to
interpret them when you select them to delete.
Likely the path is c:\documents and settings\yourusername\nethood

Thanks. I was concerned that if I deleted the entries that it would
delete the target. Guess I was wrong!
