My XP pro SP1 has become slow after a year or so. Icons paint slowly,
navigation seems slow, control panel pauses a moment before opening and then
you can watch the icons paint etc. etc.

PC is a 1700Mhz P4 with 256MB of memory.

I have done the Adaware and Hijackthis, defrag stuff but it does not help.
Seems that explorer.exe may be the problem.

What is the best way to do a re-install to refresh the various system files.
I know that there are various schools of thought wrt repair installs.
Any other suggestions other than a re-format and new install?

TIA

First step .. make sure that your system is clean. Run a updated virus check
with you antivirus software. Run a virus / trojan scan with Stinger (
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ ) , update adaware and redo spyware check.
Check in msconfig / startup , and see what program are running at startup ,
minimize these ! I guarantee if you do these things that I have mentioned ,
it will run better. You must know that if you back and reinstall you may
still have the causing problem located in your backup files. Fix it first.
