Are there any desktop search programs for Windows that track changes to
files in real time like Beagle does on Linux?

If you delete of move files with Google Desktop, MSN Desktop etc it
takes some time for the program to come back round and re-index to
realise the file is no longer there.

I find Google Desktop index in particular gets out of date very quickly
if you move and delete files frequently.

I use only Locate32, which is imho the best searching program
ever made (very very fast) and for searching in text files all over the
computer, NoteTab lite.
Who would want a program begining to spin up your disks while
you are busy else where ?? manually updating is the only choice !

there is also somewhere a simply "locate" which is great on DOS
computers

I use Locate32 in addition to Windows Desktop Search. WDS slows down the
computer, but I can live with it. Locate32 can't searches only within file
names, but for that purpose, it is great. It doesn't run constantly and
monitor changes, but I can live with that. I have it update the index once
a day. Ava Find does does update continuously, but the free version is
limited in what you can do with the files once you find them. That's why I
prefer Locate32, which gives you access to the full right-click menu for
working with files that are found. Hope this helps.

The big commercial packages do a pretty good job. My favorite is
Copernic Desktop Search,. which up-dates the index when the pc isn't
busy. Google does the same. Resource heavy when indexing, but indexing
stops when you are working, and has saved much searching (and some
people's jobs too).

You must have a busy PC because Google holds off until it sees no
one is using the system and then it does its indexing.

Yes, I do agree that Google locates old data rather too much -
better if it lost those links altogether.

Google indexes content whereas the excellent Locate32 mentioned in
other postings indexes only file/folder names.

I used the GNU freeware Wilbur http://wilbur.redtree.com/index.htm which
is quite rapid.

So, reindexing should be no problem
