Sent this a few days ago but it never appeared in the newsgroup. None of my
internet related icons on the desktop are working. Clicking them has no
affect. When I look at their properties the associated URL's are as
expected. Non-internet icons do work.

Did you recently change your default web browser?
Can you create new shortcuts that work?

OK, maybe it's something to do with spyware/malware.

Get and run these programs if you don't have them already:
1) Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
2) Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
3) Windows Defender -
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
4) Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool -
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Also make sure you're running a virus program - AVG, McAfee, Norton, etc.

It could also happen from corrupt data on your hard drive: run Check Disk.
Open My Computer, right click on drive C, choose Properties, go to Tools and
click Check Now under Error Checking - make sure that Automatically fix
errors and Scan for bad sectors are checked and hit Start.

Now if none of this works try System Restore and restore your computer to a
time before you started having this problem - go to Start -> Programs ->
Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore, choose Restore to an earlier
time, and keep following the prompts.
