DCHP won't assign IP

I have a new system (HP) running XP Home and SP2. I bought two of them and 1
of them will not renew/repair the IP address - it assigns an address of
169.254.216.146 and says limited or no connectivity. I have ICS running on
this computer (as the host). I am on dialup and from time to time, my
connections just dies. I don't disconnect, just not data passes. Don't know
if the two problems are related or not, would like some help if anyone has
any ideas.

Thanks!

ok,
1. What hardware are you using to network the two computers? Wireless?
Wired? Router? Hub? Switch?

Robert....

I'm using a Wired network, Realtek RLT8139/810x Family NIC (on both systems).
I can manually change the IP to 192.168.0.1 and I can see over the network,
but seems that I should be able to use ipconfig /renew on this one since it
works on the other one. Also have a Linksys Network Hub.

Thanks

ok, so you are not using a router, so you do not have a DHCP server. you are
connecting peer to peer via a crossover cable into each NIC right?

you should not be using any IPconfig command. Manually set your IP on one
computer to 196.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 and the other computer set it
for IP 196.168.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0

That should make your connection. Now turn on File and printer sharing and
try disabling the firewall until you actuall get a connection. Then to share
internet tell the host computer that other computers will connect to the
internet via its connection and tell the other computer to connect via the
host computer.

Hope this helps.

Robert....

I understand that more clearly now but my curiosity was, why is it that on my
client computer, I can click REPAIR on the network and it goes through the
process and shows the correct IP address (which on that one is actually
192.168.0.10) but on this computer (the ICS host) it won't do the 'repair'.
It may not really matter, or be a problem it is just that my dial up
connection is dying from time to time and I wonder if it has something to do
with me manually configuring the IP addy.

Do you have a router connecting these computers or are you simply plugging
two computers directly together through the NIC?

I have a router (hub) - my network is working, just can't 'repair' it on one
computer and have that computer assign the IP automatically.

That is most likely the cause as when you tell it to renew th IP it is
trying to do it to you ISP, which over a modem means disconnection.

Ipconfig release/renew is only effective when the address is DCHP assigned
e.g. 192............. DCHP assigns on a lease basis, therefore the "release"
lease and "renew" lease ipconfig function. Address in range of
169.......... assigned through AIPA and not on a lease basis.

Sounds like you know what you are talking about (wish I did, hehe) - the
thing is on my other computer which is exactly the same as the one I'm having
the problem with, I can click 'repair' and it assigns the address
192.168.0.10. I have a modem on that computer but have net setup a dialup
networking connection, could this have something to do with it?

It is difficult "troubleshooting" by mail, phone, chat, etc. One of the most
difficult problems for diagnosis occurs when computers on a network have
been successfully accessing the internet and for some reason one computer is
not assigned an address through DCHP. There are two groups of addresses 1.
private (most common 169.....)and 2. public (most common 192.....). Private
addresses permit communication between computers on the same network -
private addresses cannot communicate outside the network e.g. Internet -
public addresses are required and are automatically assigned by DCHP - or
manually if you prefer. I would suggest going through the XP network
troubleshooter and "boning" up on Ipconfig, Netstat, etc. Finally visit
www.careyholzman.com/net1.htm which is an excellent network troubleshooting
site with detailed screens and procedures.

If he has it configured to be

{internet}----{PC1/ICS box} ---- [hub] ---- {PC2}

Then it has nothing to do with his ISP.

The ICS box should enable DHCP lite to configure PC2 and any other PCs
connected to the HUB.

Please make sure your ICS settings are correct and you are enabling ICS on
the Intertnet connection and not the internal facing (or the connector to
the Hub) interface.

Hi,
I was wondering why I kept getting assigned to the 169 address. I have set
DHCP to be automatic. Rait and ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew all
failed. I was wondering could it be because i'm not part of the Workgroup
(currently under work domain)? But I have another laptop that's under
Workgroup but under a different workgroup name, and it can be assigned the
correct IP to connect to the internet.

This one bugs me. As both Local Area Connection & Wireless get assigned
with different 169 IP... must be something really simple that I need to
enable or disable.
Any help is appreciated!
