I click on format, cells, date, Type: 3/4/97, Ok
When I enter a date I get =8/31/92 in the formula, Excel acts like it
doesn't know its a date so puts a = sign in front of date and tries to
divide. What am I doing wrong?

Don't enter the date with a "=" in front. Just enter it
as 8/31/92. Then re-format the cell if necessary.

Thanks so much that was the problem. Can you tell me what transition formula
entry is used for. I hope unchecking it doesn't mess something else up in
worksheet.
