Is there a way to have the original date shown when a letter saved to file is opened to print a copy? When I open a previously sent letter, I must check "Properties" for the original date and substitute it for the current date before printing.

G'Day Bob,

You don't tell us what version of Word you are using.

In future, when you insert a date DO NOT INSERT
a Date Field.

A Date Field updates itself every time you print - as
you have found.

In Word 2000,2002 (Xp):
Insert>Date and Time... Do NOT tick the
'Update automatically' Box.

Thanks and G'Day to you. I'll eliminate the date field and just type in the date as part of the letter in the future. I don't presently have the automatic update option checked. I'm using Word 2000

For your existing documents, change the date fields to createdate fields
(ALT+F9 then change the field from {TIME} or {DATE} to {CREATEDATE}
retaining any formatting mask. Then ALT+F9 to toggle back again and F9 to
update to show the date you created the document.)

Put a createdate field in your letterhead template for the benefit of new
documents.
