Date Formatting

Can someone help me with my date formatting problem?

I want to enter a date as text as in: January 25, 2001
and want Excel to display the date as: 1/25/01.
I have tried using a date format but when I type the date in as text it is
just displayed as i typed it in (January 25, 2001)

Format/Cells/Number Custom Type m/dd/yy

Then type in: January 25, 2001

Works fine in XL2002
