Date field

I have Access 97. I am doing a database for someone. The database is for
travelling allowances. He has a Field called serial no. in this field the
serial no. is entered month record no. year eg May01/06, May02/06,
May03/06. etc and the record number starts at 1 at the beginning of each
month. He need a report to run of on a monthly bases, which I have done.
Now he needs to run a report off for the year. I have tried adding a date
field by doing a query between dates. but this puts the serial no. in
alpherbetical order Dec, Feb, Jan etc. I would like it to be put in month
order Jan, Feb march etc. How can I do this.
