Date automatically changing at open of old document

Every time I open a memo that I saved from the past, the date changes to today's date. Therefore, I can't know when I originally wrote it. I have Word 2002. Any ideas?
 
Hi Linda,

You should use either a { CREATEDATE } or a { SAVEDATE } field in the
documents. Actually, it should be set up in the template from which the
documents are created.

This is just a memo I typed and saved. I used the Professional Memo template. I typed it Jan of last year. But I opened it this morning it had 11/09/2003 in the Date: field. This doesn't make sense to me, but perhaps I am not understanding your solution????

There are a number of different date fields available in Word. You need to
change yours to one that reflects the date the document was created or
saved, rather than the current date.

What they want you to do is to right-click on the Date field, select "Toggle
field codes". Add the word CREATE before date to make the field CREATEDATE
instead of DATE. Right-click again and "Toggle Field Codes" back the actual
date.

In future uses what you want to do is to open the memo "template" that you
use the most, repeat the above steps, save the template, then every time you
create a new one it will keep the date constant.

If you are creating a new memo without using one of the templates, click the
"Insert" menu and select "Fields". Click the "Date" category and select
"CreateDate". You have other options as to how the date will appear in this
dialog box as well. If you use the "Insert", "Date and time" option you
will get a date that automatically updates all the time. This was how the
Microsoft memo templates were set up.
