when attempting to open a database i built i am getting the following message:

"the microsoft jet database engine stopped the process because you & another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time"

the database is used by several people but now no-one is able to open it... is there a quick solution to fix this?

The last time I got this message, I had a corrupted record that was
causing all kinds of problems. I used the Jet compact Utility
(available at the Microsoft Support site) on the database, and it fixed
the problem.

i have just downloaded the Jet compact utility but when i click 'compact' i just get a message saying 'error compacting database'... does this mean the database is irrecoverable?

There are other things to try to.

For more information on corruption including possible causes,
determining the offending PC, retrieving your data, links, official MS
KB articles and a list of vendors who state they can fix corruption
see the Microsoft Access Corruption FAQ at

Look in the folder where the mdb is, and with Access closed, if there is a
file with the same name but a ldb extension, delete it.

Try JetComp again.

If that doesn't work, try creating a new database and importing the objects
from your old one.

I that fails, you can try sending your mdb to Peter Miller at
