Data Validation Lists & Ranges

I just discovered that, if I create a data validation rule
that allows only the contents of a named range list, and
that list contains a blank cell, then any value at all is
accepted! I find this illogical. Is it just me?

PS. Why do I have blank values? Well, because I have set
a blank row before and after my data, so that the range
will expand as more items are inserted.

Thanks. Coincidentally, I had found that link this morning.

I'm still baffled, however, by the way that Excel handles data
validation with a blank cell in a list.

I don't know ... depends !

Some people use this method to just construct a drop down list, with no
thought at all toward actual data validation.

The space provides for the ability of users to *add* to the drop down list
when the "hard coded" options are perhaps not all that encompassing of the
choices necessary.
