Got a Maxtor external 40GB HDD. sometimes I can see the fooders on
it, sometimes just hangs. chkdsk finds errors, but doesn't fix well
enough to use it.

is there a recovery program I can use to get just one of the folders
off it before i reformat?

or a recovery tool i can use after reformat?

thanx

Your best bet is probably to buy a 2.5" hard disk and
install it in an external USB case. You can use this
a) to save your folder before formatting, and
b) to perform regular backups.

With "regular backups" I mean "backing up your important
files once a week", not just when disaster is staring you in
the face.

that is what this HDD is - a backup. now it it hosed.... and i need
to recover. i can't get XP to see the folder i need for long enough
to copy over. i need another pgm. any ideas?

thanx

Here are a couple of alternatives:
- Temporarily install the hard disk in some other WinXP/2000
PC, then save your files to a different disk.
- Boot the machine with a Bart PE boot CD, then save your
files to a spare disk or to a disk installed in an external USB case.

To make a Bart PE boot CD, you need this:
- A free tool that you can download from www.bootdisk.com.
- A WinXP Professional CD (but no licence number)
- About three hours of your time.

Many professionals have a Bart PE CD in their tool kit because
of its versatility.
