I want to know how to accomplish transferring data files
from my old 486 laptop loaded with Windows 3.1 and Works
for Windows 3.0 to my new laptop loaded with Windows XP
and a Home Edition Suite of Office.

You'll need to perform a manual transfer by copying your
data files to a floppy disk, then copy the floppy disk files
to your Windows XP computer.

The simplest method is to connect your 486 hard drive temporarily to your XP
cdrom cable then transfer the data.
Ensure you do an ide detect, before you restart and after you remove it.
This is easy if your new PC has a seperate ide cable to the cdrom.
If not, get one and temporarily connect it to ide two motherboard port.

Laplink Gold would be another way.
Direct cable connection with laplink cable may be another.
Printer port to printer port or comport to comport.

And cross your fingers that XP will see the disk as properly formatted
