The file is checked for problems, each time OL is opened and takes between
30sec to 8min to complete. The hotmail account is a pay account and is
accessed as http.

This often happens when Outlook remains open on shutdown or when the
outlook.exe crashes when Outlook terminates. Both mainly happen because of
addins.

I assume you already close Outlook before you shutdown the PC?
When you close Outlook, does the outlook.exe process actually quits too?

To troubleshoot see;
http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/outlookdoesntclose.htm

There are no add-ins and there is no AV integration. OL is closed first
before any restart....If not "shutdown.exe" will hang at OUTLOOK.EXE. So the
answer to your "Q" is yes, OL is closed first and monitored in the task mgr.
Closing Order:
1. WINWORD.EXE
2. agentsvr.exe
3. OUTLOOK.EXE

Perform a manual scan on your pst-file with scanpst.exe to check it for
errors and see if comes up with anything. Repeat scanning it until it has
fixed all errors.
To locate scanpst.exe see;
http://www.msoutlook.info/question/77

If that fails, remove your Hotmail email account, restart Outlook and then
add it again. Installing the non-beta version of the Outlook Connector may
help in your case as well.

The ".pst" had no errors and the ".ost" could not be scanned, because it
thought OL was open. I restarted the computer and tried to scan the ".ost"
again, but it failed for the same reason. I then removed the Beta version of
the OLC and reinstalled the 12.0 version. That didn't help either.

You suggested removing the Hotmail account....Did you mean the account or
the profile?

Yes, sorry about that; the Outlook Connector switched to the ost-file format
again. You should then of course use scanost.exe but I guess you knew that
already?

Are you running any startup applications that rely on Outlook? For instance,
mail sync software (connected mobile device?), fax software, Skype, etc...
These applications could directly place a lock on those files. Either
disable their integration with Outlook, close them or prevent them from
automatically starting up to be able to scan the ost-file.

As for the removing part; you could also opt to create a new mail profile
with only the Outlook Connector as an account in order to test if it has any
effect with the new mail profile.

I didn't know about the ".pst & .ost" scanners, but I did know there was a
pst and an ost file. I also knew that I was using the ost file, because of
the way I'm accessing Hotmail, but that's about it. For anything that
involves the inner workings of OL, I have to ask.

As for the software you asked about....I don't run any of those types that
you mentioned, nor anything that I can think of that would lock the file.

I have a Dr's appointment this morning, but when I get back I'll open
"msconfig" and turn off all but the Firewall & AV and see if that makes any
difference. I'll post back the results this afternoon or evening.

I don't know which is more hassle; Waiting for OL to scan the data file each
time, or the "Trial & Error" method of disabling processes until I find the
conflicting one.

It is appears to be a conflicting program, because disabling all the startup
programs in "msconfig" appeared to cure the problem.
Also the "SCANPST.EXE" will scan an ".ost" file and the repair option also
works on the ".ost" files, but the "SCANOST.EXE" won't.

Will be out of town until Tuesday, but will try to post back with my
findings later in the week.
