Everytime our users have Outlook open then close it
(properly), but need to get back into it immediately, they
receive this message.

"The date file 'personal folder' was not closed properly."
"This file is being checked for problems"

This message started appearing about a week ago. I can't
find any information about it or what's the real cause.
Is it because of SP3 for Office? Does anyone have a clue??

Please help...

Are the PST files stored on network drives?
Is Outlook closing entirely? How long are they giving it to close?

You might want to consider using a newsreader like Outlook Express or Forte
Agent rather than the web interface to the newsgroups - it's a lot easier to
do nearly everything there, including searching, which is always a good idea
to do before you post, as well as mark messages to be watched, and filter
based on replies to your posts.

The Microsoft public news server is msnews.microsoft.com and you can
subscribe to as many groups as you like.

For tips on using the web interface, should you prefer to use it, see

I have noticed the same thing. It began happenning with SP3, and
therefore appears like a MS bug. I frequently (but not always) get
the message on my large 1 gig+ PST files when opening outlook.

Usually it happens when the computer was previously shut
down/restarted with outlook still open.

This is the exact problem that I have. If I close Windows without closing outlook I get the error message the next time I start Outlook. If I close Outlook before I close windows, no problem.

I'm pretty sure that it started when I installed SP3. Is there a way to uninstall SP3?

If you close Windows without closing Outlook, what do you expect? If
Outlook is in the process of doing some background things (compacting,
checking mail), then of course it will give you this message when you
restart it. Don't you regularly close programs before shutting down?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, woolfie asked:

What do I expect? I expect Outlook to behave the way every other program that is written for Windows to behave. It will close itself down gracefully and then allow windows to close. Just like it did for the past 2 years until I updated to SP3, that's what I expect.
